International Day of Peace, also known as World Day of Peace, is celebrated every year on September 21st. This day is celebrated all over the world to strengthen the ideals of peace, through the observation of 24 hours of non-violence and truce.
This day promotes global solidarity to build a peaceful and sustainable world.
This year’s theme of the International Day of Peace is:
“Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world”
The focus is on helping everyone recover better, how to build resilience, and how to turn our world into a place that is more equal, fairer, fairer, more inclusive, sustainable, and healthier.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC), in February 2021, unanimously passed a resolution calling on member states to support a “continuous humanitarian pause” in local conflicts. According to the official UN website, the global ceasefire must continue to be respected, in order to provide people trapped in the conflict with access to life-saving vaccines against the Covid-19 pandemic and treatments.
In 1981, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared the third Tuesday in September, the opening day of the regular sessions of the General Assembly, as the International Day of Peace. Later, in 2001, the General Assembly declared September 21 the International Day of Peace.
International Day of Peace is marked as a period of non-violence and truce. This day plays a significant role in promoting peace throughout the world. It also promotes a green and sustainable global economy that creates jobs, reduces emissions and builds resilience to climate impacts.
