We continue to bring you series of narratives to help and support your kids as they are returning to school. Some of the kids in British Columbia are returning to school now and some of them will be back in September. However, the question remains how do we prepare them?
As you might have read yesterday, we decided for our 9 year old son to return to school this week, 5 days per week. Here in British Columbia, Canada, schools are open, on a limited basis but still… Since both parents are essential workers, he is able to attend full time ….However, I would lie if I tell that his anxiety was not high … Not just his anxiety but other kids’ too … Kids still have many unanswered questions and need constant reassurance that they will be ok. I think kids went too fast from having all restrictions, to parks and schools opening in the same week. They even approach parks with such caution and are unsure what they can touch and if they can touch. My son even asked me “How come we have only 7 kids in the class, we sit far away from each other and then we go to gym and play basketball with the same ball?” I sincerely said to him to go with the flow, to follow basic precautions in terms of washing hands and keeping distance or not touching everything around, but also to relax and have fun ….
